Kick Back & Relax: Beach Clubs in Tulum

Writer's picture: clairemariekallettaclairemariekalletta

If you're going to Tulum and want a few days to sit back and relax, you're going to want to hit these four beach clubs. Whether you plan on kicking off the day with yoga and a green juice or a hot stone massage and a margarita, these beach clubs can make your dreams come true. Based on food, atmosphere, and activities, you and your main beaches will have a good time at any of these unique, beautiful tropical oasis's (is oasis's a word?).

Health Food Freaks & Wellness Warriors: Sanara Beach Club

We stumbled into Sanara Beach Club after a local recommended we eat at The Real Coconut, which ending up being my favorite restaurant in all of Tulum (and the whole world tbh). While enjoying our breakfast on the waterfront deck of The Real Coconut, we noticed the ground staff laying out beach beds and umbrellas on the sand below us. Our server hooked us up and gave us a complimentary beach bed after dining at the restaurant, which we went back to continuously all day for coffees, smoothies, cocktails, and even sat down again for lunch.

Aside from the food, the best thing about Sanara is they seemed to be one of the only beach clubs actually clearing the heaps of seaweed bought in from the ocean. It's nice they understand visitors don't particularly enjoy finding seaweed in their suits. The hotel also has yoga, a spa, excursions, and a cute little boutique filled with bathing suits, boho jewelry, and Sanara's own skincare line. If you and your beach want to kick start the day with a charcoal lemonade followed by 3 spicy margaritas (it's called balance) Sanara is the perfect place for you.

*Please note this was by far my fav place in all of Tulum

Boogie Beach Bathing: Sian Ka'an Tulum

If you want to really feel "one with nature" in a glamorous type of way, head over to Sian Ka'an Reserve, home to Ka'an Beach Club. Ka'an is all the way at the end of Tulum beach, occupying a clump of land on the private nature reserve. It takes a little while to get there, yet the drive is worth the laid back, super chill atmosphere. There are hanging beach beds, a restaurant under the palms, and an entire "glamping" site where you can fulfill your Fyre Festival dreams and successfully camp out overnight in a tent equipped with beds, outlets, and waterfront views.

We ate lunch at Ka'an Tulum Restaurant when we arrived. Although the food came in quite small portions (normal, suggested serving size portions), it motivated us to try more of the delicious things on the menu. As per usual we started off with guacamole and spicy margaritas and then tried some of the dishes we couldn't pronounce or translate on the menu. Our server told us we were eating tamales, shrimp, and pork belly which all sounded really weird but turned out being mouthwateringly delicious. We spent the rest of the day exploring the grounds and bumping to the dancy, clubby, yet somehow tropical music played by the Ka'an's own live DJ.

Low Key and Laid Back: Ahau Beach Club

Ahau Beach Club is the perfect spot for a low-key, lazy beach day. In exchange for a spicy margarita from the bar, the staff gave us beach towels and let us lounge on a beach bed for as long as we pleased. We stayed for hours and relaxed after a morning of cenote exploring. The music was great, the people around us were super chill, and the cocktails were cheap, fabulous, and splendidly spicy.

Ahau also has a beautiful yoga studio overlooking the ocean, a cute little loose leaf tea shop, and a "jungle gym" nestled in between the jungle and the beach equipped with free weights, balance beams, and more. One of the best parts about Ahau - they have their own oceanfront Raw Love smoothie shack and is just steps from the original Raw Love Cafe, one of our favorite brunch spots.

Feel Fancy: Habitas

Habitas is a beautiful beach club, wellness retreat, and restaurant located at the start of the Tulum Beach strip. On our last full day in Tulum, we visited Habitas with our fingers crossed that it wouldn't be crowded, knowing it as one of the most famous yet most exclusive beach clubs in the area. Luckily, Habitas was totally empty when we arrived and we were warmly greeted by the most attentive and caring servers we experienced on our trip.

The food at Habitas was one of the fanciest and most delicious ate in Tulum. We started with the guacamole, asking for it to come as spicy as possible. It arrived with a plate of plantain chips and flame torched jalapeños atop of it, signaling they heard us loud and clear. I also had one of the best salmon dishes of my life, which says a lot considering salmon, avocados, and margaritas are the only delicacies in my eyes. We ate our lunch in the beautiful sunlit glass lounge and spent the rest of the day on the beach beds, swinging on the bar swings and hammocks, and in the waterfront infinity pool, which is propped up on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean.
